Piergabriele Mancuso, noted scholar and director of the Jewish Studies Program of the Medici Archive Project, returns to Paola’s Studiolo to share one of his newest discoveries, the life and works of the Jewish painter, Jona Ostiglio (c. 1620 – after 1695).
Although he was a painter of the Medici court and a member of prestigious Academia delle Arti e Disegno, Ostiglio’s existence was practically unknown until now. We will learn of the context in which Ostiglio created his works in Florence, and a movie-worthy love story in his life. Mancuso will show us eight works he believes Ostiglio painted, including beautiful still lifes of fish and several landscape paintings from the collection of the Uffizi gallery.
